Stefan Esterbauer trained as a joiner from 1993 to 1997 and then worked in a joinery workshop in Bavaria. From 2000 to 2003 he attended the Federal College of Sculpture in Hallstatt, Austria. From 2003 to 2008 he studied sculpture at the University of Art and Design Linz under Renate Herter and Wolfgang Kirchmayr, and in 2007 also at the Athens School of Fine Arts in Greece under Professor George Lappas. He has been a member of the Innviertel Artists’ Guild since 2005. In 2008 he took up a teaching post at the Federal College of Sculpture in Hallstatt.
Since 2003 Esterbauer has taken part in numerous exhibitions and symposia in Austria and abroad. Among other things, from June 2008 to June 2009 he had an open-air solo exhibition of wooden sculptures titled PAARungen, part of the ARCOgARTen art project on the Linz Art and Culture Mile along the Danube, near the Brucknerhaus (Linz was European Capital of Culture in 2009).
One focus of his work is simple, basic geometric forms. He works on them by “splitting, cutting, spreading, bending, piercing and stacking”, creating new approaches to form and to content-related expression by “exhausting the load-bearing capacity of the material”. He lives and works in Linz and Hochburg-Ach, Austria.
