Mate Čvrljak, HRV

(Konjevrate near Šibenik, 1934 – Rijeka, 2018)

He graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Split in 1955. He graduated in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1961, in the class of prof. Vanje Radauša. From 1963 to 1965 he was an associate of the Antun Augustinčić Master Workshop. From 1965 until his retirement in 2000, he worked as a professor of Fine Arts at the Mate Blažina High School in Labin. He was a member of HDLU (Croatian association of artists) Rijeka.

He focused his creative energy on the classic themes of the human figure, while his main themes were portrait, self-portrait, figure and nude. He is the author of numerous sculptures in public spaces (monument to “Matija Vlačić Ilirik” in Labin, Monument to NOB fighters and victims of war in Buzet, “Paleolithic man” in Aranđelovac, sculpture “James Joyce” in Pula, “Bather” in Rabac) and more than 60 monumental portraits and busts of famous people in stone, marble, bronze and terracotta located in Zagreb, Labin, Pazin, Rovinj, Potpićan, Čapljina, Osijek, Drniš, Skopje, Buzet, Pula, Poreč, Medulin, Vrsar, Kanfanar, Kastav, Drinovci, Palmanova, Manzano and many other cities. The works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout Croatia and abroad. He was a member and one of the founders of Labin Atelier. He has participated in numerous sculptural symposiums and workshops in Croatia and abroad.

He participated in the Mediterranean Sculpture Symposium on two occasions, in 1985 and 1996.
